For my M.S. in Crop Science I'm taking Stats II (ETR 522) at NIU and Plant Biochemistry at UIUC and an independent study (hopefully at NIU) to make a website that reviews Ag Books for Kids. I spent the weekend on this project. I may be done with the M.S. in Crop Science in May!!!

For my M.S. in Crop Science I'm taking NRES 488 from UIUC and for my M.S. Ed. in Instructional Technology I'm taking Information Access and Social Responsibility for LIS (ETT 542T) at NIU.

16 July 2005 GRRR!

Great disappointment. Amazon.com required a signature (not that we don't get a half dozen shipments a week without a signature). Thus, instead of a HP 6 book, we received a USPS notice of a package. Thanks.

15-16 July 2005

Great fun was had at Barnes and Noble and Borders at the Harry Potter 6 Parties. BN wins for staff costumes, decorations, and activities. Border's was winning as the more hip and happening spot early on. However, when I went back to BN later it was really hopping, too.

Went to ALA in Chicago. I only went to the exhibits, but it was fun. The best part was meeting Lisa Yee at the Scholastic book signing and lots of free manga. I'm looking forward to reading Lisa Yee's "Stanford Wong Flunks Big-Time". Favorite free manga so far is Shojo Beat (a new magazine similar to Shonen Jump). I will probably subscribe.

I have about 10 days to finish all of my final projects. I can't work on fun stuff. The good news is that I will graduate in May!

17 Mar. 2004 Grrrr

I voted yesterday. As I live in Illinois, I didn't get any say in the major presidential candidates. It was all decided before I got to vote. Note to self. Apply for jobs in New Hampshire.

25 Feb. 2004 Oh. Wow!
I'm taking Cataloging II this semester with an illustrious instructor. No fault of hers, it is giving me a headache. Literally. So today I was using the Library of Congress' Authority Resource and I inadvertently typed in Jounal instead of Journal. Well 6 items popped up anyway. I used the LC's handy dandy form to report errors. It says it should take about a week to hear back from them. I got a reply in a couple of hours. Why did I take Cataloging II you may ask? I was contemplating the list of classes one day and a thought popped into my head; I love order in data. I love correct, perfect, orderly data. Hmm, maybe I'll be able to get my dream job some day; finding errors in databases as big as the LC online catalog!

Karen

P.S. The funny thing is that in class. When the instructor was showing us the Authority Resource, I typed in Coco Lee's name and back comes two authorized headings for her. Later, I submitted an error which the LC people looked at and corrected, too.

21 Feb. 2004 Love 'em or Hate 'em Lists

Last Fall, I had to sign onto a listserv for a class and of the three I chose XYZ Listerv in the digest version. I couldn't stand it. Everyday, I get a 100mb digest file. It is next to impossible to slog through the junk to find the interesting bits. They do have a good archive though, which I can look at if I have an interest in something that they might be able to answer.

For another class, I had to sign up for Web 4 LIB. In this case I get individual emails. The volume isn't that high, so they are easy to read or delete.

Now I joined ABC Listerv for another class. I have strict rules on my hotmail in box-approved people only-this listserv was going to my junk mail box. I was quite irritated that the emails don't all say they come from the list name so that I could direct them easily to a folder. I dinked around for weeks getting ticked off, before I finally took the two minutes to figure out that I could filter on the *to* field, which I hadn't known you could do. I sometimes get emails from people that are important in my junk mail box, and it was next to impossible to find the good emails because I am getting hundreds of emails from people I don't know. So, I really had to look at all the email names and subjects carefully. You have now heard why I hate big Listservs. Don't you feel like you are reading a long post on a listserv?

All these nice posters in a happy community? Give me a break. There is so much off-topic chatter and sniping on this list, I can't stand it. Here is just one example from Testy Poster A today, "And, So and so, for all your talk about community and caring all I'm feeling from you is negative energy. You should speak more peace and love and kindness. [I'm paraphrasing to protect myself from getting sued.]

If I was going to remain on this list I would have to be really choosy and just read topics that really looked interesting to me. I can't wait to get off of it.
